Agent Spotlight: Emily Thurman

How did you first get started in the real estate business?

Working as the executive assistant to our broker, Blake Morar, for two years, I was afforded a priceless opportunity to learn the many intricacies and nuances of the local luxury real estate market. The more I experienced working in this capacity the more I came to realize I had found my calling.

What drove you to join the industry?

I have always had an appreciation for notable architecture and interior design so I decided real estate sales would bring both of my passions together.  For eight years I worked on one of the area resorts while simultaneously managing a successful local designer clothing boutique the last five of those eight years. I began developing my talent in sales during my time spent in retail management but desired a greater challenge. After obtaining my real estate license in 2010 I began researching the ubiquitous real estate companies found along the Emerald Coast to find the one that stood out among them. I knew that learning the business from the very best was crucial to my success.

You are an avid painter. When did you start painting?

I have painted on and off since I was a kid.  I also enjoy using pencil, charcoal and pottery.  Art was always my favorite subject;  I took classes in both high school and college.

What about it [painting] drives you to continue?

I find that it relaxes me and provides me with a creative outlet.  I love listening to good music and enjoying a glass of wine while I paint.  I tend to go through phases with my art; my style really changes with my emotions and environment.  I also enjoy the challenge of learning to use new mediums and techniques.

What is your favorite subject to depict?

Lately I have really been into landscape scenes inspired by our area..  I am constantly inspired by the beautiful area I am so fortunate to live in.  Where could we pick up one of your pieces?  They can be spotted at Smith’s Antiques and Ava’s Attic.  I have also been known to give them to my buyers as a gift the day of their closing.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be?

I have recently been intrigued by the beauty depicted in photography from Santorini, Greece; of course, there are several other places on my list!  I also have a special place in my heart for Costa Rica.  I have been twice and would love to go again.

Where is your favorite spot along 30A and why?

I love the West end of 30A including Grayton and Blue Mountain Beach.  The Coastal dune lakes in Blue Mountain beach combined with the high elevation set up the perfect scene to inspire me.  I also love the scrub oak trees you can find in the natural vegetation of Grayton Beach.

Is there a spot that routinely gives you inspiration in your painting around Destin?

I am a lady angler and enjoy fishing of any kind, whether it be inshore or offshore.  I am so inspired by the coastal scenes that our bay, bayous, dune lakes and Gulf have to offer.  Being on a boat always provides the perfect backdrop for an inspirational shot with my camera.  I usually take photos while on the boat and mimic them with paint once back in front of my canvas.

Emily, I’m sure you don’t remember me. Your mother and I worked together before your parents were even dating, then dating, then married, etc. I was one of the two witnesses at their wedding. I am so proud of you. You have done extremely well in your life. I hope things continue to go well for you in the future. Tell your mom I love and miss her.
